I saw the "spinning globe" icon for about 4 minutes, but then it gave the error: I then restarted the Mac, and tried to enter macOS Recovery ( ⌘+ R on boot). Try restoring from a different backup or reinstall macOS and then transfer your information from a Time Machine backup using Migration assistant. it will not migrate any system files however, so you'll need to rerun all system updates on the new computer afterward. a few apps may not migrate correctly and would have to be reinstalled but this is rare.
this will migrate all your data and users and most of the applications. when you first boot the new mac you'll get setup assistant which will offer to migrate your data and apps from a TM backup. So when migrating to a new computer you should not use that option and use Migration or Setup Assistant instead.

if you try to do a full system restore on different hardware, in particular on a newer computer it will most likely result in either non-bootable or malfunctioning system. but it can only be used on the exact same hardware. this will give you an exact copy of the old system in every detail.

you can do a full system restore using the restore from backup utility on the SL install DVD. that will keep your user data, apps, fonts etc but give you a fresh OS. If you get a different kind of mac then use setup assistant instead. this will wipe the hard drive and restore your whole system just as it was at the backup time. to use it boot from the snow leopard install DVd and choose "restore system from backup" from the utilities menu. if you'll get a new mac which is exactly the same hardware as the faulty one then you can use it. but it should only be done on exact same hardware as i said.
